In the Tarot deck, Death is card number 13 in the major arcana, ruled by Scorpio and symbolizes transformation. The archetype exists within all of us and can be more or less visible in our lives at different times.
Death shows a skeleton riding a white horse. Death has its own victory procession carrying a black flag with a large rose. A cardinal or pope stands in front of the horse and prays for his life. A king lies dead on the ground; a symbol that even the holiest persons must eventually face death. A girl falls down. The landscape is rich in assets and resources that show the vulnerability, that even in happy communities people can die. A sun sets at dusk. The whole card breathes anxiety but also freedom. Death is the ultimate freedom and liberation from the bonds of the flesh, from the earthly vanities that have occupied men in all ages.
Depending entirely on which tarot cards are drawn around Death, the card communicates differently.
Death carries a gift. Death is an illusion. Death is just a bridge from one place to another and there is no reason to fear either death or any other end of life. We are not here to hold on to things, people, places, situations without feeling appreciation for the fact that life consists of phases. That everything is perishable and there is a great freedom in this. The phases are just sections of learning in our life and when the learning is done Death comes and escorts us on to the next phase. Everything happens with enormous Love. Death is truly an adventure and the beginning of something new. All the people who have died in my life have come to me a week or so afterwards, radiant, happy, perfected and in such a glow. They have understood now, they have seen and achieved a deeper peace, they are receiving education, love, healing and rehabilitation. Yes, there is a lot going on on the other side!
This tarot card comes up in my layouts when something changes from one situation to another. It can mean that something is coming to an end or has achieved its purpose. You must close a chapter to open a new one. You are done, time to go to the next and with new possibilities! Out with the old and in with the new!
All cards have their gifts and they are here to help us become aware. We must become whole and free from inner conflicts. Not until we have accepted ourselves 100% have we mastered the lessons of life.
